Design Build Project

Design Build has been my favorite class while I've been at Auburn. During the first class, students were broken into groups of eight-nine and given a project to either renovate or demolish and rebuild. Our class got the opportunity to do a renovation on the building that we walk into every single day, Harbert Civil Engineering Center. For the renovation, our team was given a $7.5 million dollar budget with a 25% contingency. We were also asked to meet other requirements such as minimum office spaces, classrooms, computer labs, etc.. Throughout the first part of the semester, each group was required to turn in nine submittals which lasted through the week after spring break.  After that, the project and time management was completely left up to each group. Each group was also required to make their design with LEED accreditation in mind. The class itself is actually based around the idea that each student should be able to pass the LEED green associate exam after the semester ends. Our design was able to achieve LEED platinum, come in under budget, and within the two year max time period for scheduling. I loved this project because it was the most real world experience I have had while attending college. My title on our team, LEED DB & Associates, was the team co-leader. My responsibilities for this project included working with and providing support to the LEED/Proposal Team Leaders to help ensure discussions and decisions that would help in leading toward closure and a group consensus. I also worked in helping provide the team with a vision for each project objective, and acting as a facilitator during team discussions. My separate duties throughout the project included keeping documentation of project responsibilities, beginning meeting discussions, delegating workloads fairly amongst the group, and assisting with any proposal-related decisions. I also performed the cost estimation for the project as well, and achieved five LEED credits on my own behalf.

PM Project

Project Management was a specialty elective that I decided to take during my last semester as a Junior. During the class, students were broken into teams and assigned to submit a report that needed to be completed by the end of the semester, requiring submittals accordingly throughout. The final submittal required all forms that would be required of a project manager prior to construction (i.e., work breakdown structure, quantity survey analysis, project schedule, construction cost estimate, etc.). During this project, my main task was cost estimation. For the project, each group was given a set of plans for a small one story home. With the use of RS Means and figuring the area and/or volume, I was able to create an appropriate cost estimation for the property. This class gave a great insight into project management, and truly helped me decide what I want to do with my civil engineering degree.

Business Writing Project

Business Writing was a technical elective that I decided to take during my first semester as a Senior. During the class, we completed the first half of the class with individual work and assignments.  Nearing the end of the semester, with about a month of class left, students were broken into groups of two and assigned to submit a report that needed to be completed by the end of the semester. The groups were assigned by pairing two people with the same major, so I was paired with another civil engineering student.  The final report was required to be 8-10 pages in length, and written about a problem in our major or field of study. During this project, my contributions included, writing four of the eight pages, and creating the powerpoint presentation. As a group, we chose to write about the problem with our crumbling water infrastructure across the United States.  This issue occurs constantly throughout the United States, and as civil engineers we deal with pipe bursts and aging pipes every single day.  It is estimated that Chicago alone is losing 22 billion gallons of treated water every single year just due to pipe burst.  The full report can be read below.
